Political Sign Regulations: What to Know

campaign.jpg

As primary season heats up, we're receiving more and more phone calls asking when and where political signs can be placed.

Here is the ordinance governing political signs (emphasis added):

(Exempt from permit) - Nonpermanent political signs which do not exceed three (3) square feet in area. Such signs shall not be posted on any public property. Political signs shall not be posted more than forty-five (45) days prior to the election to which the sign relates and shall be removed by the candidate within five (5) days following the election to which the sign relates. (Sec. 21.164(2))

Violations of this ordinance can create not only a cluttered roadside, but dangerous visual impairments at intersections. We urge residents and candidates alike to advertise their support in a way that is respectful of public property and safety.
