Garbage, Recycling and Yard debris:

Garbage, recycling and yard debris are collected once per week at each residence.

Garbage:
Residential garbage must be placed inside of the roll cart provided by the city, and placed at the curbside no later than 7:00 am on your respective day of collection.

Please DO NOT place the roll cart at the curbside except on the day of collection. All roll carts must be removed from the curb by 8:00 pm on the day of collection.

Please DO NOT place anything in the roll cart except for household garbage, especially No paints, chemicals, motor oil, etc.

Please DO NOT use the roll cart for anything other than disposal of household garbage.

Recycling:
Each resident is provided one recycling bin by the city.

The following items are currently collected for recycling by the city:

  • Please deposit only cleaned food containers. FOOD RESIDUE IN RECYLED MATERIALS WILL CAUSE THE ENTIRE BIN TO BE REJECTED FOR COLLECTION.
  • Plastics such as milk jugs, soda bottles, and cooking oil bottles but only recycle codes #1-7 AND bottle shaped where the neck is smaller than the body! (No egg cartons, plastic bags, butter tubs or other food containers that are not bottle shaped)
  • Glass (clear, green or brown) in bottle shapes only such as beverage and food containers. (No light bulbs, dishes, or window pane type glass)
  • Newspaper and magazines
  • Aluminum and tin, such as soda and vegetable cans
  • Corrugated cardboard, such as moving boxes (No cereal boxes, drink cartons or other odd type paperboard).  Please be aware that some collection days cardboard at the curb to be recycled may exceed the city’s collection capacity.  In those instances the department will attempt to notify the resident that the cardboard will have to be collected on another day, or the resident may take the cardboard to one of the city’s recycling containers at the Public Works facility at the corner of Covenant Rd. and Robert Springs Rd.
  • NO motor oil or filters! (Richland County Public Works recycles used motor oil.)  Please see http://www.richlandonline.com/departments/PublicWorks/motoroil.asp for more information.
  • NO tires! Tires must be disposed of by residents at the Richland County C&D landfill on Monticello Road. Please see http://www.richlandonline.com/departments/publicworks/landfill.asp for more information.

Yard debris:
Residential yard debris such as leaves, pine straw, grass clippings, trimmings from shrubs, and trees  may be bagged or placed at the roadside in loose piles. Tree limbs must not exceed 5 feet in length or 5 inches in diameter.

By city ordinance, please be aware that the City of Forest Acres does not remove debris generated by commercial tree cutters, tree surgeons, or landscapers or construction debris generated by remodeling or repairs. The contractor or resident is responsible for such disposal at an approved county landfill.

Burning of any trash is prohibited in the city limits.

Appliances:
Household appliances are collected by the city each Friday by requesting a pick up no later than the preceding Thursday.  Appliances include washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, refrigerators, microwave ovens, and metal file cabinets.  Note: Televisions must be placed at the curb alongside the garbage roll cart as they are not recycled at present.  However, televisions may be taken by a resident directly to the Richland County C & D Landfill, 1070 Caughman Road North; located off Hwy. 215 N. (Monticello Rd.).  Televisions deposited at the landfill are recycled.

Special Needs:
The city will provide special collection services to the rear of the house for garbage and recycling if the resident is physically unable to access curbside service. A physician must certify the resident’s need for special services. Please call City Hall to make arrangement for this service if you believe you are eligible.

Holiday Schedules:

The sanitation and streets departments usually only observe New Years Day, Martin Luther King Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. If a day of collection early in the week falls on one of these holidays, each missed day of collection will be made up the following day. For instance, Martin Luther King Day is observed every third Monday in January.  That week Monday’s collection will be Tuesday; Tuesday’s collection will be Wednesday.  The remaining routes on Thursday and Friday will be collected as scheduled.  If the holiday falls on a Thursday, collection will usually be on Wednesday, if it falls on or Friday, and then collection is Thursday.
